Canterbury holds the majority of freshwater in Aotearoa, but this public resource is significantly degraded because of intensive agriculture. Excess nitrogen wasted from farming systems accumulates in freshwater and groundwater, polluting drinking water supplies and harming aquatic life.

The Environmental Law Initiative is preparing for two significant High Court hearings in May, challenging Environment Canterbury (ECan) over decisions that permit nitrate pollution in the region's freshwater systems. Meanwhile, the Government is intent on weakening the bottom lines for water quality and has plans to replace the Resource Management Act.

This is a rallying moment; decisions made now should protect and restore the health of our waterways for generations to come.
